The new play, The 7th Grade Viking is based on piece of the same name by poet Taylor Mali. A veteran of the HBO series Def Poetry Jam, Mali has won the National Poetry Slam championship four times; he has published two books of poetry and several CDs of spoken word, has narrated six audio books, and for a brief time he was the official voice of Burger King. For nine years he taught college, high school, and middle school. Taylor Mali has given express permission for his poem to be converted into a stage play by local author and playwright, Bradlee W. Skinner, theatre teacher at Bear River High School. The 7th Grade Viking is the story of teacher in a private school who uses history lessons about the Scandinavian Vikings to prepare his class for inevitable death of one of their classmates who has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.
